"On the Waterfront," Elia Kazan's classic film about an ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman taking on his corrupt union bosses, will be screened on Sunday, April 2, at 3 p.m. as part of the Leonard Bernstein Festival at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. At 2:15 p.m., Mark McGregor, S.J., and Mark Scalese, S.J., both assistant professors of film at Fairfield, will introduce the controversial 1954 Academy Award Best Picture, which features a Bernstein score.
At the heart of "On the Waterfront," is Marlon Brando's unforgettable, Oscar-winning portrayal of Terry Malloy, the guy who "coulda been a contenda," but ends up tending pigeons and running errands on the docks. When he inadvertently participates in a murder, he has to reassess his past and decide whether he will help bring down the dock racketeers. Joining Brando in the all-star cast are Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger and Eva Marie Saint, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her film debut. Kazan also won the Academy Award for directing.
Shot in atmospheric Hoboken, N.J., the film features a score considered one of Bernstein's best musical works.
Tickets are $7. For tickets, call the Quick Center box office at (203) 254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396. For more information, visit www.quickcenter.com.
