Ross Lecture Explores Urban Influence on Freshwater Ecosystems, Feb. 21

An upcoming lecture in the Ross Lecture series will feature Matt Schuler, PhD, an esteemed assistant professor from the Department of Biology at Montclair State University, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at 12 p.m. in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library. 

Dr. Schuler's presentation, titled "Investigating How Urban Landscapes Alter Freshwater Environments," will focus on his research, which is to understand what drives the distribution, abundance, and coexistence of species in ecological communities. With mounting concerns about urbanization's impact on natural habitats, Dr. Schuler's expertise will offer insights into this pressing issue.

Attendees can expect a comprehensive exploration of the ways in which urbanization reshapes freshwater ecosystems. Dr. Schuler's research will shed light on the various mechanisms through which human activity transforms these vital environments.  

The Donald J. Ross, PhD, Biology Lecture Series commemorates the enduring legacy of a beloved and dedicated professor who shaped the lives of countless students during his illustrious 58-year teaching career. Dr. Ross, professor emeritus of the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp biology department, left an indelible mark on the academic world, inspiring generations of students to pursue careers in medicine, biology, and related fields. He passed away in August 2008, but his influence continues to resonate, and this lecture series serves as a tribute to his lasting impact.

The Ross Lecture Series continues through April with a lineup of distinguished speakers, each offering unique insights into the world of biology and its applications in various domains. All lectures will be held in-person on select Wednesdays at noon; attendees can enjoy refreshments during the events.

This lecture series is dedicated to the memory of Donald J. Ross, PhD Professor Emeritus, who passed away in August 2008 and was one of the first members of the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Biology Department. Teaching was Dr. Ross’ priority, whether it was in the classroom or laboratory. Hundreds of his students over his 58-year teaching career went on to earn MDs and advanced degrees in biology or related fields. This series continues his work of educating and engaging students in scientific inquiry.
