The Center for Catholic Studies will welcome Dr. Meghan Clark for a lecture titled “Dignity and Agency: Catholic Social Teaching and the Lives of Women.”
The place of women in Catholic social teaching is complicated. The tradition seems to treat women more as objects of special concern than “dignified agents.” Practically, however, women are powerful agents of development within their communities.
Meghan Clark, PhD, will discuss the agency of Catholic women—both around the world and locally—in a 5 p.m. presentation in the BCC Dogwood Room on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
In her lecture, titled “Dignity and Agency: Catholic Social Teaching and the Lives of Women,” Dr. Clark will reflect upon Catholic social teaching in light of local listening to the experiences of women working in community development. Can an ethic of local listening help Catholic social teaching more fully practice what it preaches?
Dr. Clark attended Fordham University and received her PhD in theological ethics from Boston College. She is an associate professor of moral theology at St John’s University, where she engages students on diverse topics in moral theology and Catholic social thought.
A senior fellow of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society, Dr. Clark serves as a faculty expert for the Holy See’s Mission to the United Nations.
Dr. Clark is the author of The Vision of Catholic Social Thought: the Virtue of Solidarity and the Praxis of Human Rights (Fortress Press, 2014), and co-editor of Public Theology and the Global Common Good: The Contribution of David Hollenbach (Orbis, 2106), both of which were awarded first place prizes from the Catholic Press Association Book Awards. Active in public theology, she is a columnist for US Catholic magazine and contributes to America Magazine and Millennial Journal.
Presented by the Center for Catholic Studies at Ƭapp, this 23rd annual lecture honors Anne Drummey O’Callaghan, who devoted her life—as catechist, advocate for the intellectually disabled, youth minister, and director of religious education—to spreading the good news among children, teenagers, and adults in the Diocese of Bridgeport.
