The ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Art Museum will present a lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer-turned-midwife and Fairfield faculty member, Dr. Stephanie Welsh.
In affiliation with the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Art Museum's exhibition Women’s Rights are Human Rights, Stephanie Welsh DNP, CNM, FACNM, will give a lecture titled "A Cut at the Heart of Womanhood" on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
Dr. Welsh is an assistant professor of the practice and clinical faculty specialist in midwifery at Fairfield's Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies. In 1996, she won the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for her shocking sequence of photos of a female circumcision rite in Kenya.
A 1995 graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in communications, Dr. Welsh earned her master's degree in nursing from Yale University and her DNP from UConn. She is a certified nurse-midwife at Mansfield Ob/Gyn and a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
Dr. Welsh worked as a photojournalist until 1999, when she left the field to pursue a career in midwifery. Her journalism honors include the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for a photographic essay on female circumcision in Kenya. She has photographs in the permanent collections of The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St Lawrence University and The Newseum in Washington, D.C. She has lectured widely on issues of bodily integrity and women, as well as the social, political, and psychological consequences of female circumcision.
Her practice as a midwife centers on individualized obstetric and gynecologic care for women of all ages, emphasizing patient education and health advocacy. Dr. Welsh is actively involved in Centering Pregnancy, a model of group prenatal care offered that provides a dynamic atmosphere for learning in pregnancy and beyond.
