Dr. Stovall will present “The Demand for Educational Justice Remains Unflinching: Disrupting Chaos and Building Possibilities.”
The School of Education and Human Development is pleased to welcome , PhD, professor in the departments of Black Studies and Criminology, Law, and Justice at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), to deliver a keynote for the annual Diversity Lecture Series. This event will be held online on Thursday, March 10, at 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public. .
Dr. Stovall’s conversation is titled “The Demand for Educational Justice Remains Unflinching: Disrupting Chaos and Building Possibilities.” His remarks will take the current moment into account, and consider the attacks on Critical Race Theory and any inclusion of critical perspectives on race, class, gender, age, (dis)ability, and sexual orientation in K-20 education.
“It is not common in the academy to find scholars who are deeply involved in community work building, while teaching full-time and producing high-quality scholarship, but Dr. David Stovall has found a unique way to do so for decades,” said associate professor and director of the Teaching and Foundations Program Pierre Orelus, PhD. “It is a breath of fresh air to have him as our keynote speaker this year.”
Dr. Stovall’s scholarship investigates the areas of Critical Race Theory, the relationship between housing and education, and the intersection of race, place, and school. In the attempt to bring theory to action, he works with community organizations and schools to address issues of equity, justice, and abolishing the school/prison nexus.
Following Dr. Stovall’s address will be a panel discussion and attendee Q&A.
