Grosfeld Professor of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought at Amherst College will deliver a lecture entitled "A History of Holocaust Trials: From Nuremberg to Demjanjuk and Back Again". On October 19, 1946, the most famous of the post-World War II trials: the Trial of Major War Criminals, held at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, came to an end. Nineteen former Nazis were found guilty. Twelve were sentenced to death, one in absentia; the rest were given prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life behind bars. During his virtual lecture, Professor Douglas will discuss the Nuremberg Trial’s legal, political, and historical significance.
Professor Douglas is the author of seven books, including The Memory of Judgment: Making Law and History in the Trials of the Holocaust (Yale, 2001), and The Right Wrong Man: John Demjanjuk and the Last Great Nazi War Crimes Trial (Princeton, 2016). His essays have appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angelas Times. He is the recipient of fellowships including National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Institute for International Education, and American Academy in Berlin, and the Carnegie Foundation.
