The Humanities at Work Series, presented by the Humanities Institute of the College of Arts and Sciences, will host its annual alumni panel on the humanities and careers on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library multimedia room. This event’s four featured alumni will return to campus to field questions from current students, discuss their transitions from college to career, and explain the profound impact their humanities education has had in helping them achieve their professional goals.
From an editor at a word-class media company to a museum educator who has worked at one of the largest, most-visited art institutions in the world, this year’s panelists represent a wide breadth of careers and humanities majors including history, international studies, studio art, English, and Spanish. Alumni scheduled to present include Terry Sullivan ‘89, editor for the creative division of Madavor Media; Ashley Marie Toombs ‘07, director of external affairs for BRAC USA; Amanda Hood (Caixeiro) ’09, senior director of talent and corporate human resources at Nestlé Waters, and Julia Morrow ’13, former museum and collections management assistant for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and current museum educator for the Connecticut Historical Society.
“Students primarily major in the humanities to satisfy an insatiable intellectual curiosity and a drive to comprehend the history, scale, and possibility of human experience,” said Nels Pearson, PhD, professor of English and director of the University’s Humanities Institute. “The story we often forget to tell is that en route to this lofty goal, students acquire irreplaceable skills of analysis, insight, problem-solving, creativity, and argumentation that give them distinct advantages and make them crucial contributors in a variety of professional scenarios.”
