Men's and Women's Teams Earn Medals and Break Records to Open the Conference-Wide Meet

Fairfield Swimming and Diving is off to a strong start at the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships this weekend in Buffalo. At the midway point of the championship meet, both teams have earn medals and shattered school records in the quest for a conference title.

On the women’s side, the defending MAAC Champion Stags are in first place entering Friday night’s action. Fairfield has totaled nine medals in the seven finals held to date, including five gold medals. Leading the way as individual MAAC Champions are Sara Ostensen ’21 in the 500y freestyle, Morgan Hansen ’21 in the 200y individual medley and Maria Nitti ’21 in the 50y freestyle. Ostensen and Hansen each set a Fairfield record with their winning times, and the Stags have also won gold in both the 200y medley relay and 800y freestyle relay.

For the men, Evan Fair ’22 has led the way at his first MAAC Championship with a third-place finish and school record in the 500y freestyle. Two more school records have been established this week in both the 200y medley relay and the 800y freestyle relay. The Stags have also picked up points in the 200y freestyle relay and on the boards from Lukas Stanton ’22 in the 1-meter dive.

Action resumes for the Stags on Friday at 6 p.m. with the 2019 MAAC Champions set to be crowned on Saturday evening; final events also beginning at 6 p.m.
