New Date for 2019 Catholicism and The Arts Lecture: April 1

Anthony Domestico

Anthony Domestico, PhD, of Purchase College, SUNY

Sponsored by the Center for Catholic Studies, Anthony Domestico will present “Art, Sacrament and Poetry” at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp on Monday, April 1 at 4:30 p.m.

In his lecture, “Art, Sacrament and Poetry,” Anthony Domestico, PhD, will consider how two contemporary Catholic poets – Lawrence Joseph and Fanny Howe – are rethinking the sacramental in poetic form at the present moment.

Domestico, associate professor of literature at Purchase College, SUNY and the books columnist for Commonweal magazine, said his remarks are inspired by David Jones's 1955 essay, "Art and Sacrament," in which Jones thinks through the relationship between modernism and the sacraments.

Conducting research primarily focused on modernism and its relationship to intellectual and religious history, Domestico is the author of a recently published book entitled: Poetry and Theology in the Modernist Period (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2017). Domestico regularly reviews fiction for the Boston Globe and the San Francisco Chronicle. In addition, his essays have appeared in Religion and Literature, Literature and Theology, Christianity & Literature, the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies, and Persuasions.

Domestico completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. He continued his studies and earned his MA, MPhil, and PhD from Yale University. Currently, as an associate professor at SUNY Purchase, Domestico’s teaching interests are wide-ranging, varying from modernist poetry and prose to science fiction, the history of the lyric, and Jane Austen.

The “Art, Sacrament and Poetry” lecture is free and open to the public. It will take place on Monday, April 1 at 4:30 p.m. in the Multimedia Auditorium of the DiMenna-Nyselius Library at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp, located at 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
