As part of a year-long artistic collaboration between ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp’s Quick Center for the Arts and the Pilobolus dance troupe, the Quick will present three unique Pilobolus performances, all within 24 hours!
Billed as a Pilobolus Performance Explosion, the three stagings will include: Shadowland on Friday, September 21 at 8 p.m., Shadowland 2 on Saturday, September 22 at 2 p.m., and an evening that combines well-known favorites with new repertory on Saturday, September 22 at 8 p.m.
Back by popular demand, Quick audiences were first astonished by Shadowland’s creativity and shadow-work in February 2017. A universal and intimately portrayed experience that is both intensely dramatic and comedic, Shadowland tells the surreal story of a young girl’s sensational world as she comes of age. With acrobatics and shadow play, this unique partnership between Pilobolus and Steven Banks – lead writer for the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants – is driven by a rhythmic score written by popular American musician, producer, and film composer David Poe.
Shadowland 2 uses mixed media to tell the love story of two people and their quixotic quest to save an imaginary bird. Employing animation, video, and shadow puppetry, this madcap adventure dips its toe into the genres of science fiction, film noir, and romantic comedy. Shadowland 2 has toured the globe but has rarely been seen in the U.S., making this a special treat for local audiences. The 2 p.m. performance will be followed by a Meet & Greet with the company and delicious favorites from local food trucks.
The trilogy of performances will culminate at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 with a mixed repertory that includes Gnomen, a lyrical quartet for men with an unusually inventive physical vocabulary. It will also feature Branches, a more recent work that explores the rich beauty, humor, and drama of the phylogenetic tree. Additionally, Pilobolus will team up with Indie rocker Thao Nguyen for Warp & Weft by the company’s first all-woman trio. Come to the theatre early to enjoy happy hour in the lobby’s Café Q.
The Pilobolus Performance Explosion is sponsored by Moffly Media and the Westport Inn. Tickets are $120 for all 3 shows, $100 for 2 shows, and $70 for 1 show, with discounts for Quick Members.
