Based on the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, a brilliant young woman who begins working at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, Silent Sky delivers a poignant tale of a women’s quest to find meaning in both her life and the universe. During a time of immense scientific discovery, Henrietta and the observatory’s other female “computers” work tirelessly to map the stars, even though their male supervisors banned them from using the telescope or pursuing their own theories. Compelled by limitless wonder and a passion for the cosmos, Henrietta challenges societal expectations and commits herself to her work. Navigating family obligations and the possibility of romance along the way, she ends up making discoveries that ultimately change the world’s understanding of the universe.
“Lauren Gunderson’s Silent Sky gracefully reminds us that wonder is still ours for the taking and that we too can become exceptional no matter what dream we pursue,” said production director Jackob G. Hofmann. “At a time when women were still fighting for the right to vote, the play’s protagonist changed the way we view our place in the universe. It is my hope that Theatre Fairfield’s production will inspire audiences to reignite their own sense of curiosity and perhaps inspire some well-needed changes in our present-day society.”
The cast of Theatre Fairfield’s production of Silent Sky features Romina Rabines ‘19, Emily Ramsey ‘20, Fallon Sullivan ‘20, Martha Hegley ‘20, and Carlin Fournier ’22. The play is co-produced by visual and performing arts professors Marti LoMonaco, PhD, and Lynne Porter. The artistic team includes scenic designer Michael Blagys, costume designer Julie Leavitt-Learson, lighting designer Scott Cally, and projections designer and technical director Anne Kendall.
