College of Arts and Sciences Faculty to Host Memorial Colloquium in Memory of the Late Classical Studies Professor

For more than 50 years, ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp professor Vincent J. Rosivach, PhD, dedicated his life to teaching the classics while investing in the success of his students and his respected colleagues. On Saturday, October 13, 2018, the College of Arts and Sciences' Classical Studies program will honor the memory of its departed colleague with a memorial colloquium featuring original research presented by the late professor’s students, coworkers, and friends.
The all-day academic conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Diffley Board Room in Bellarmine Hall and will feature a light breakfast, luncheon, and wine reception. Seating is limited, and is required in advance.
Featuring original research presentations by more than a dozen guest speakers, including historians, philosophers, linguists, and art history experts, the colloquium will touch upon a vast array of Classical Studies topics from Aristotle and Achilles to Ancient Rome, ancient art, and Ancient Greece.

Dr. Rosivach joined the Fairfield community in 1965, earned tenure in 1970 and was promoted to professor of classics in 1976. For 53 years, he dedicated his life to fostering the minds of his students, inspiring fellow professors, and embracing what it means to teach at a Jesuit institution. Over the course of his professional career, he immersed himself in literature and education and inspired others to do the same. He authored two books in addition to more than 120 articles and reviews within the field of classics.
Dr. Rosivach contributed to the young minds of his students up until his final days, when he was still teaching regularly scheduled courses. For his many years of service to his colleagues and the University, he was awarded the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Faculty Welfare Committee Lifetime Service Award. He passed away earlier this year on April 13, 2018.
Dr. Ruffini recounted Dr. Rosivach’s sense of duty to his students and colleagues and believes that the late professor’s work, both at Fairfield and in the field of Classical Studies, was not simply a job for him, but a way of life.
“Vince invested in the success of his students and mentored his colleagues,” Dr. Ruffini said. “All of the speakers at this event - friends, coworkers, and former students - have accomplished what we have accomplished in our careers in part because of his dedication to all of us. We hope that by coming together to celebrate him, we will be reminded to do the same for each other and our future colleagues and friends.”
