Fairfield to Challenge Canisius in Poughkeepsie With an NCAA Tournament Bid at Stake
This Saturday, May 5, Fairfield Women’s Lacrosse will challenge Canisius for the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. Opening draw from Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. is slated for 1 p.m. with the MAAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA postseason on the line.
The Stags advanced to the ninth MAAC Championship Game in program history with a 17-9 win over Monmouth in the semifinal round on Thursday afternoon. Kathleen Hulseman ’19 and Taylor Mitchell ’19 led the attack with four goals apiece, while Paulina DiFatta ’20 anchored the defense with 14 saves.
The Golden Griffins from Canisius knocked off top-seeded tournament host Marist to reach Saturday’s final.
Earlier this season, Fairfield defeated the reigning two-time MAAC Champion Canisius at the Demske Sports Complex by an 11-8 final. The Stags and Griffs will be meeting in the MAAC postseason for the fifth consecutive season, though all four prior encounters were held on the Griffs’ home turf in Buffalo.

The winner of the 2018 MAAC Championship will receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The tournament field will be unveiled on Sunday, May 6 at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
