Art of the Gesù: April Events on Campus

As a part of the current Gesù exhibition, the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Art Museum has teamed with University partners to bring enriching lectures and special events to campus.

Hailed as “the most ambitious show in the museum’s history,” the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Art Museum’s (FUAM) international loan exhibition, The Holy Name. Art of the Gesù: Bernini and his Age brings to Fairfield treasures from the Church of the Gesù that have never before left Rome. The exhibition is free and open to the public now through May 18.

On Thursday, April 5 at 5 p.m., Rev. John O'Malley, S.J. , professor in the Department of Theology at Georgetown University, will present a keynote lecture, "The Jesuits and the Arts: How and Why It Happened ." After selling out at its previously announced venue, this event has been moved to the Egan Chapel in order to accommodate all interested attendees. Fr. O'Malley is a widely published expert on the religious history of Early Modern Europe, with specialties on the Council of Trent and the Second Vatican Council. Among his best-known works are The First Jesuits (Harvard University Press, 1993), translated into 12 languages, and What Happened at Vatican II (Harvard University Press, 2008).

Later in the evening on April 5, a Baroque musical performance, "Sacred Music in the Age of Bernini," is scheduled at the Egan Chapel from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. The concert is free but is required.

On Friday, April 6, the FUAM will host a symposium titled that is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Barone Campus Center. This academic symposium will feature eminent scholars in the fields of art history, architectural history, music history, and religious studies. Later in the month on Thursday, April 19, Michelle DiMarzo, PhD, curator of education and academic engagement, will lead the Art in Focus Gallery Talk on The Chasuble of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese . Belarmine Hall Galleries, 11 a.m. Register to attend .

Last but not least, a 600-page book, The Holy Name. Art of the Gesù: Bernini and his Age , written by distinguished scholars involved in the exhibition (St. Joseph’s University Press), and edited by Frank and Clara Meditz Director and Chief Curator of the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Art Museum Linda Wolk-Simon, PhD, is now available at the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Bookstore and will be available for purchase at the lecture and symposium. Characterized as “The most important book in any language on the art, architecture, and early history of the Gesù,” the book includes essays by Gauvin Alexander Bailey, Andrew Horn, Christopher M. S. Johns, Evonne Levy, Franco Mormando, Fr. John O’Malley, S.J., Louise Rice, Betsy Rosasco, Xavier F. Salomon, John Beldon Scott, and Linda Wolk-Simon.
