Timely, Powerful Parable of the Sower Comes to Quick Center

Ƭapp’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts will present Toshi Reagon’s “genre defying” musical stage adaptation of Octavia Butler’s award-winning novel on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 8:00 p.m.

Parable of the Sower chronicles the spiritual awakening of young Lauren Olamina in the midst of a dystopian America in which eerily familiar issues of environmental and economic crises have driven society to the brink of collapse.

“We are thrilled to present this ground-breaking performance, fresh off the heels of its run at The Public Theater in New York City,” stated Peter Van Heerden, executive director of the Quick Center for the Arts. “Bringing artistry of this caliber to the Quick is an important point of distinction for Ƭapp and for theater in the state of Connecticut, especially when the work resonates on such critical and timely themes.”

Musician Toshi Reagon created this adaptation of Parable of the Sower with her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, PhD, who is a civil rights activist and Freedom Singer. Their collaboration showcases a unique ability to meld a variety of musical genres – rock, African-American spirituals, folk music, and soul – into an operatic performance that reveals deep insights into gender, race and the future of human civilization.

Tickets are $50, $40, $5 for Ƭapp Students, and $30 for Quick Center Members. For more information or to reserve your seat, visit or call the box office at 203-254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396.

This presentation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower is made possible with funding by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project, with lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Co-Commissioned by The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi and World Premiere at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi, November 9, 2017. The performance is sponsored in part by the Bridgeport Holiday Inn.
