Ultima Vez to perform 'In Spite of Wishing and Wanting' at Quick on March 3

In a multimedia performance unlike anything the audience has experienced before, Ultima Vez will perform Wim Vandekeybus’s 'In Spite of Wishing and Wanting,' featuring an original soundtrack by David Byrne of The Talking Heads.

"One of the most wildly energetic, bizarrely conceived dance pieces to have landed on a local stage..."

— — The Toronto Star

Causing a huge international stir at its world premiere, this pivotal dance piece imagines the primal potential of a world inhabited by men alone – fierce, wild, naïve, and playful. “Fear and desire circle around the same core,” says Vandekeybus. “This desire to transform is the central theme of In Spite of Wishing and Wanting .”

Deriving its power from an organic symbiosis between dance, theatre, and film, In Spite of Wishing and Wanting incorporates dance sequences -- underpinned by the sensual soundtrack of David Byrne -- with monologues on fear, the desire for security, and the unconscious. Accompanying the performance is a short film entitled The Last Words , based on short stories by Julio Cortázar.

“The Quick has enjoyed bringing incredible arts and culture experiences to packed houses this winter,” shared Lori Jones, the Quick Center’s director of programming and audience development. “ In Spite of Wishing and Wanting was last performed in the U.S. at the Lincoln Center Festival in 2000 and now Ultima Vez brings it back to the States for one night only at the Quick, so we encourage folks to buy tickets early before it sells out.”

Wim Vandekeybus is a Belgian choreographer, filmmaker, and photographer who has produced over 30 international dance and theatre productions. Vandekeybus has a strong interest in psychology, which is seen across his body of work, reflected in his interest in tension and conflict, the body and mind dichotomy, risks and impulses, as well as physicality, passion, intuition and instinct.
