Watch Young Athletes with Autism Strive for Independence in “Swim Team” on November 6

See how three families harness the power of community to transcend disability.

On Monday, November 6 the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions (GSEAP) Special Education Program will host a screening of “Swim Team,” an award-winning documentary that profiles the rise of the Jersey Hammerheads, a competitive swim team made up of a diverse group of teens on the autism spectrum. The film follows three teammates nearing the point of “aging out” which is the age when eligibility for government services diminishes significantly. The screening will be followed by an audience Q&A with the director, Lara Stolman.

"The Special Education Program is very excited to bring this inspiring documentary about a positive inclusion experience for students with ASD to Ƭapp," said Alyson Martin, PhD, co-director and assistant professor of Special Education . "This event will assist with raising awareness about inclusive practices for students with ASD on our campus."

Taking place over the course of a year, the film covers heavy yet important topics that chronicle the triumphs the team achieves as they strive for independence, inclusion, and a life that feels winning. Ultimately, the documentary offers an inspiring look at the power of community to transcend disability and create hope for the future.

“Swim Team” will be shown on Monday, November 6 at 6 p.m. at the Quick Center for the Arts at Ƭapp. This event is free and open to the public and students, educators, and community members are invited to attend. To learn more and register please visit fairfield.edu/swim-team .
