Men’s Soccer will host a semifinal on campus, Thursday, Nov. 9
With a 3-0 victory over Rider before a crowd of 2,978 at Lessing Field on Wednesday evening, Fairfield Men’s Soccer claimed the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Championship. As the top seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship, the Stags will host a semifinal matchup on campus on Thursday, Nov. 9. Fairfield’s opponent will be determined by Sunday’s quarterfinal action. Should the Stags win their semifinal, the MAAC Championship Match will be held on Lessing Field on Sunday, Nov. 12. The winner of the 2017 MAAC Championship will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
This Sunday at noon, Fairfield Field Hockey will play in the MAAC Championship Game for the third consecutive season after a 6-0 win over LIU Brooklyn in a Friday semifinal in West Long Branch, N.J. The Stags will meet either host and top-seeded Monmouth or fourth-seeded Rider in the finals, pending the result of their Friday afternoon matchup, with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line. Fairfield won the MAAC Championship in 2015 with a shutout victory over Quinnipiac and was ousted in overtime by Monmouth in the 2016 championship game.
MAAC Championship action continues on campus on Nov. 17-19 when Fairfield Volleyball hosts the annual tournament on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The Stags, who are the two-time defending MAAC Champions, have clinched a first-round bye in the tournament and will begin their postseason in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Fairfield began its fall MAAC Championship season this past Saturday with both the Women’s Soccer and Cross Country teams in action. Led by a goal from 2017 MAAC co-Rookie of the Year Alex Madden ’21, Fairfield Women’s Soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Iona in their opening MAAC Championship match at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando. However, the Gaels clipped the Stags in penalty kicks to advance in the tournament and end Fairfield’s 2017 campaign.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country both placed ninth in the MAAC Championship last Saturday in the first season for Head Coach David Scrivines. The men were led by Scott Daly ’19 while the women were paced by Kaylee Bergen ’19. The Stags now move on to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Friday, Nov. 10 in Buffalo, N.Y.
