Richard Greenwald, PhD, has been announced as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp. After an extensive national search, Dr. Greenwald will join Fairfield on July 1, 2017 from Brooklyn College, CUNY where he currently serves as the Dean of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences.

Dr. Greenwald has a strong background in liberal arts education, in both public and private institutions. Before serving as Dean at Brooklyn College, he was an Executive Dean at St. Joseph’s College in New York, and the Chair and Founding Director of the Business Students Program and Director of University Partnerships at Drew University, among many other appointments. He has been a teacher of history, business and sociology since 1995, and received his PhD in American History from New York University in 1998 – a degree that added to his existing master’s from NYU and a bachelor’s degree in history, with honors, from Queens College, CUNY.

“Dr. Greenwald will be a tremendous addition to the strong team at Fairfield,” said Mark Nemec, PhD, president-elect of ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp and incoming member of the Politics Department. “I am excited to work with Rich as we continue to promote innovation in the College, and continue to build upon Fairfield's reputation for excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.”

Named by The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the leading “higher-education thought leaders,” Dr. Greenwald’s extensive scholarship and writings have been published in major national outlets including Inside Higher Education , The Wall Street Journal , The Chronicle of Higher Education , Boston Globe , and New York Daily News , among others.

“Dr. Greenwald brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Fairfield and we are excited to have him join as Dean of our College of Arts and Sciences,” said Christine Siegel, PhD, interim provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs. “His deep experience in innovating the liberal arts to meet the demands of today’s environment will contribute to Fairfield’s continued success.”

Dr. Greenwald succeeds Yohuru Williams, PhD, who leaves the post after serving as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since September 2015. Dr. Williams is heading to Minnesota to serve as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas.
