Fairfield Athletics Hosts National Girls and Women in Sports Day
A group of 120 local youths came to ¶¶Ňô»ĆƬapp’s campus on Sunday, Feb. 5, to participate in National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The group included various local Girl Scout troops as well as members of the Fairfield Athletics .
The day began with a multi-sport clinic in the University’s new RecPlex. Student-athletes representing all of Fairfield’s women’s varsity teams, as well as members of the cheerleading and dance teams, led activities to introduce the group to their sport.
Following lunch at the Barone Campus Center, the festivities moved to Alumni Hall, where the Fairfield women’s basketball team challenged Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Saint Peter’s. With the National Girls and Women in Sports Day contingent leading a crowd of over 500 fans, the Stags defeated the Peacocks, 50-38, for their third consecutive win.
“National Girls and Women in Sports Day is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Alison Sexton, Fairfield’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator. “It is a wonderful chance to introduce girls from our community to the athletic and academic opportunities available to them, as well as a chance for our female student-athletes to act as role models for the next generation of young women in sports.”
