Colleen Young ’20 Wins Gold at World Para Swimming Championships

Sophomore earns three total medals at the international event.

Fairfield Swimming and Diving standout Colleen Young ’20 won three medals, including her first career international gold, while representing the United States earlier this month at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico City. The sophomore also brought home a silver and a bronze at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool.

"Colleen had great training in the fall and has been fantastic so far this season" said Fairfield Head Coach Anthony Bruno. "I was able to be with her when she was named to the U.S. World Championships Team at the World Championship Trials in Colorado earlier this year, and I am so happy to see her hard work paid off this past week. This is a great step for her towards Tokyo in 2020."

Young’s gold medal came in the 100-meter breaststroke, where she clocked a championship-record time of 1:17.21. She earned a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:33.40 and took home the bronze in the 100-meter backstroke with a mark of 1:13.11.

The 2017 Para Sport Festival featured two of the biggest Para sport competitions: The World Para Swimming Championships and World Para Powerlifting Championships. Nearly 1,200 athletes, officials and staff from 89 countries—as well as the Independent Paralympic Athletes' Team—took part in the competition. It was the first major international event after the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, signaling the start of the new Paralympic cycle for Tokyo 2020.
