Dr. Mark Silk to Speak at Annual Christopher F. Mooney, S.J. Lecture, Oct. 19

¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp's Center for Catholic Studies continues its tradition of bringing nationally recognized scholars to campus with a lecture by author Dr. Mark Silk, on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m., in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room.

Free and open to the public, his lecture, “The Place of Religion in the Presidential Election," is the 23 rd Annual Christopher F. Mooney, S.J. Lecture in Theology, Religion and Society.

Dr. Silk's lecture will look at the place of religion in the 2016 presidential election campaign in three dimensions. The first, how voting patterns are forming in terms of the religious identities and degrees of religious commitment; which religious issues have become the most important and why; and how the presidential candidates religious background and commitments are playing a role, with special attention being given to Catholicism in each of the three dimensions.

Dr. Silk is a reporter, editorial writer, columnist and scholar. He was the founding director of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College. He is the author of Spiritual Politics: Religion and America Since World War II and Unsecular Media: Making News of Religion in America.

The Christopher F. Mooney, S.J. lecture is an annual event sponsored by the Office of the Academic Vice President, the Department of Religious Studies and the Center for Catholic Studies. The lecture honors Fr. Mooney, a former ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp academic vice president who died in 1993. He was the author of eight books, including Teilhard de Chardin and the Mystery of Christ , (Collins and Harper & Row) which won the National Catholic Book Award.
