LAST CALL! Enter the Student Business Plan Competition Today

Students interested in participating in the sixth annual Fairfield StartUp Showcase entrepreneurship competition will have their last chance to stake their claim in the competition on Saturday, November 12 at the Business Model Workshop . This is a required workshop that will cover the basics of translating a business idea into a working business model.

The day will kick off with a webinar from Boston Consulting Group Principal Stephen Edison '03 who will address what it takes to create a thriving business model. Then students will pitch their business idea and declare their intent to enter the competition. The pitches will serve as an opportunity for students to recruit teammates and prospective mentors. For students who have not yet joined a team and who do not have a business idea, but want to participate in the competition, this is an opportunity to be recruited by a team.

"We could not be happier to have Stephen speak to our students about business strategy," explained Chris Huntley, associate professor and program director of Fairfield StartUp. "Boston Consulting Group is a world class firm that advises some of the most innovative companies in the world. Stephen leads a group in Dallas that has lots of experience taking companies from startup, to launch, to market dominance. He will lead the students through several case studies to demonstrate what makes a successful business model for a startup, and will also cover the creative process needed to keep the business innovating as it grows. After the prepared remarks, Stephen will work with students one-on-one on their business ideas. This is an unprecedented opportunity for our students to get advice from a true expert."

Following the elevator pitches, teams will regroup to work on their business model and then the entire group will walk around to each team to hear how they are developing their business idea. The event will close with a preview of the criteria for being selected to go to the Showcase in the spring where teams will vie for funding in front of a panel of investors.

Students interested in participating in the Business Model Workshop should register on OrgSync. The event will be held from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Dolan School of Business, room 110B.
