MLK Celebration at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp January 25-29
¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp will honor the contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a weeklong series of events beginning on Monday, January 25 at 6 p.m. with a screening of Fruitvale Station in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Multimedia Room. Following the movie, there will be a panel discussion.
On Tuesday, January 26 at 3:30 p.m. at Egan Chapel, students and faculty will join in a Memorial March around campus to raise awareness about the history of social injustice and activism at Fairfield. At 7 p.m. in the Lower Level Barone Campus Center, spoken word artist George Yamazawa will perform. Yamazawa is considered to be one of the top spoken word artists in the country. He is a National Poetry Slam champion and a two-time Individual World Poetry Slam finalist.
Claudia Rankine , an award-winning poet, will be this year’s keynote speaker at the 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation , which will be held on Wednesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. at the Quick Center for the Arts . This year’s Vision Awards will be presented to Dr. Bryan Ripley Crandall, director of the Connecticut Writing Project at FairfieldUniversity and assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions (GSEAP); Sydney Johnson, head coach of men’s basketball; and student Michael Joe Harding '18.

Performing for Change , a student group that addresses social issues through performance, will be held on Thursday, January 28 at 4p.m. in the Barone Campus Center Oak Room.
On Friday, January 29 at 10 a.m., 100 local eighth-grade students will participate in the Youth Leadership Academy in the Barone Campus Center Oak Room, where they will learn valuable leadership and conflict resolution skills.
The eighth annual Poetry for Peace celebration will be held on Friday, January 29 at 6 p.m. at the Quick Center for the arts. For this event, elementary school students from neighboring communities will come to campus to share their award-winning poetry.
For the final event, Danney Gibbs, Minister of Music for The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Mass Choir, will lead the Gospel Mass at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, in the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola.
Wylie Smith Blake, campus minister of Community Outreach, and Dr. Kris Sealey, associate professor of philosophy, are the co-chairs of this year’s MLK observance.
All events are free and open to the public.
