Rev. Dr. Dorian Llywelyn Speaker at 2016 Bellarmine Lecture, February 10

On Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room, Reverend Dr. Dorian Llywelyn, will deliver ¶¶Ňô»ĆƬapp’s 2016 Bellarmine Lecture titled “O Victorious General, Invincible in War: The Virgin Mary, the Church, and the State.” The event, which is free and open to the public , is sponsored by the University’s Center for Catholic Studies.

Reverend Dr. Llywelyn’s recent research focuses on popular devotion and its relation to theology. For this lecture, he analyzes the portrayal of the Virgin Mary. Llywelyn states, “In Christian doctrine and theology, the mother of Jesus is portrayed above all as a source of comfort, solace and nurture. As a cultural icon, the Virgin plays a more complex and ambiguous role, at times affirming the status quo, yet equally disturbing and challenging it,” he says. In addition, she is also portrayed “as Queen of Peace and protectress in battle, the figure of Mary has been invoked as both champion of empires and Mother of the Church – and not infrequently in skirmishes between Church and State.”

Reverend Dr. Dorian Llywelyn is a member of the California Province of the Society of Jesus, a theologian and author of Sacred Place, Chosen People: Land and National Identity in Welsh Spirituality and Toward a Catholic Theology of Nationality . He currently teaches systematic theology at Heythrop College, University of London.
