Read Across America at University Bookstore, Saturday, Feb. 27
The Downtown University Bookstore will join millions across the country to celebrate the eighteenth annual National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day during the event this Saturday, February 27 at 4:00 pm. The event is free and participants are asked to .
To celebrate the value of reading, the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Bookstore is hosting the event for kids ages 3+ who are accompanied by an adult. There will be a live Cat in the Hat costume character and Lucas the Stag mascot on hand to greet families. The story to be read aloud will be, What Pet Should I Get? written by Dr. Seuss. Children will participate in a make-your-own Dr. Seuss hat, have a chance to win raffle prizes and receive free giveaways.
As an added component of this event a book drive will take place in an effort to share the resources necessary to build a strong love for reading and increase literacy learning. Book donations will go to Cesar Batalla School in Bridgeport, CT. ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp’s Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions works in close partnership with Cesar Batalla School which is in need of 3-5 th grade level chapter books. The University Bookstore will have a selection of new books available in this reading category for purchase to be donated during the event.
NEA's Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2) and the joys of reading, is expecting a movement of more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read to honor and celebrate this event. NEA and many of America's leading literacy, youth and civic groups are bringing a nation of readers together under one hat - the red and white stovepipe- made famous by the Cat in the Hat that sparks reading excitement.
