¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp basketball is set to recognize five “Leaders of the Herd” on Tuesday, November 10 at the Manhattan Club (at Rosie O’Grady’s – 800 Seventh Ave) in New York City. Award-winning sports commentators Len Elmore , Jackie MacMullan and Bob Wolff are recipients of the third annual Stags Lifetime Achievement Award for long and meritorious service. This year’s Stags Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Bob Berchem ’62 and Tabitha Brickhouse-Fortt ’90 .

Now in his 27th year broadcasting college basketball, first at CBS and presently at ESPN, Len Elmore is one of the most accomplished basketball players in history. He is a former high school All-American at Power Memorial Academy in New York, and a former collegiate All-American and three-time all-ACC team at the University of Maryland. Elmore is a former ABA and NBA standout and notched over 3,000 points and 3,000 rebounds during his NBA career. He is an attorney with a Law degree from Harvard University, and a professor at Columbia University. A pioneer and innovator, Elmore’s professional experience spans a rich athletic career, several prestigious law firms, television commentary, college teacher, and significant business and public interest endeavors.

Bob Wolff , enshrined in the media wing of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as recipient of the Curt Gowdy Award, has been on the airwaves for an astounding 75 years. The Duke product is now working in his ninth decade, and is the world’s longest-running TV and radio sportscaster at age 93. He did play-by-play for the Holiday Festival for 29 years, the National Invitation Tournament for 25 years, and was the television voice of both New York Knicks NBA championships in 1969-73 and ’72-73, all on MSG Network. Wolff’s call of Yankees pitcher Don Larsen’s perfect game, the only one in World Series history, is one for the ages.

Jackie MacMullan , inducted into the media wing of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 with the Curt Gowdy Award, is a columnist for ESPNBoston.com and commentator on ESPN as a regular panelist on the popular program “Around the Horn.” MacMullan is a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she led the team in scoring as a sophomore and was team captain as a senior. She is regarded as one of this country’s preeminent sports writers. From 2002 to 2007, she was a columnist and associate editor of the Boston Globe , and from 1995-2000 she was senior writer at Sports Illustrated . MacMullan began her career at the Globe in 1982, covering a wide variety of sports including four Final Four tournaments: the World Series, Stanley Cup Finals, Olympic Games and NBA Finals.

“We are delighted to honor the accomplishments and careers of Len Elmore, Jackie MacMullan and Bob Wolff,” said Fairfield Director of Athletics Gene Doris. “This triumvirate has served its profession in exemplary fashion with style and grace. They have conducted themselves with great professionalism on the highest level, which is a model for both aspiring sports commentators of the future and for all student-athletes as they prepare for their post-college careers.”

Doris will be joined by head men’s basketball coach Sydney Johnson, head women’s basketball coach Joe Frager and special guests in presenting the awards for “distinguished service and lifetime achievement with accuracy and journalistic integrity, while keeping the efforts of the student-athletes at the forefront.”

Bob Berchem has remained active at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp by holding various leadership positions. He served as a ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp trustee and facilitated arrangements for the University’s continued use of Webster Bank Arena for varsity competition.He has been a member of The President's Circle since 1981, and was chairman in 1989. In honor of his mother, Berchem funded the Barbara M. Berchem Scholarship for the benefit of first-generation college students.

He is principal and president of Berchem, Moses, & Devlin P.C. Berchem continues to enjoy an active role on the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp campus through his service to students and administration. He graduated with a degree from ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp in 1962 becoming the first in his family to earn a college degree. He was awarded a full scholarship to Villanova University School of Law where he received his JD in 1965, finishing first in his class. He then received a William W. Cook Fellowship to the University of Michigan's Law School, where he received his Master of Laws degree in 1967.

Tabitha Brickhouse-Fortt played basketball at ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp under Head Coach Dianne Nolan beginning with the 1986-87 season through the 1989-90 campaign. She joined the team as a walk-on for the 1986-87 season but quickly developed into an everyday player who made contributions as both a scorer and as a rebounder. She shot 50 percent from the floor over her final two seasons with the Stags and played in 55 of the team’s 57 games played during her junior and senior seasons. She graduated from ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp with a degree in biology from the College of Arts & Sciences.

Brickhouse-Fortt is a family medicine doctor in Stamford, Connecticut and is affiliated with Stamford Hospital. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and has been in practice for 19 years. She served on ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp’s Alumni Board for four years (2008-11).

“I am pleased to honor Bob and Tabitha for their commitment to ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp as well as their support of our athletic program,” commented Doris. “Both have been an integral part of the success enjoyed by our men’s and women’s basketball teams over the years.”
