Women's Lacrosse to Play for MAAC Championship on Sunday
The Fairfield women’s lacrosse team will play for the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship this Sunday in Buffalo, N.Y. The second-seeded Stags will be in action at noon live on ESPN3 against tournament host and top seed Canisius. Fairfield defeated Monmouth, 8-7, in Friday's semifinal round.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Mike Waldvogel, the Stags are 13-4 overall and 7-1 against MAAC opponents this season. Fairfield's lone MAAC loss was an 11-10 defeat at the hands of Canisius on April 11 at Rafferty Stadium.
The Stags’ attack is fueled by a pair of Second Team All-MAAC selections, Alex Fehmel ’17 and Riley Hellstein ’17. Fehmel is Fairfield’s leading scorer with 27 goals and 13 assists, while Hellstein has scored 19 goals and added 37 draw controls in the midfield.
The Fairfield defense has been led this spring by First Team All-MAAC honorees Chesley Sidaras ’16 and Meghan Reda ’15 and Second Team All-MAAC performer Melissa Laible ’16. Sidaras currently leads the nation with a .535 save percentage and owns a MAAC-best 6.62 goals-against average.

Also this weekend, Fairfield men’s lacrosse is hosting the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Rafferty Stadium. The Stags, who are the regular season champions of the CAA, were clipped by a score of 9-8 by the University of Massachusetts on Thursday evening in the semifinal round. Towson won the championship with a 9-8 win over the Minutemen on Saturday.
The 2015 season for Fairfield men's lacrosse has seen the club enter the national rankings for the fourth consecutive season and knock off a nationally-ranked opponent (No. 20 Villanova on March 21) for the seventh straight year – a streak that spans the tenure of Head Coach Andy Copelan, the 2015 CAA Coach of the Year. Eleven student-athletes received All-CAA recognition in the Stags’ first season in the conference, including Rookie of the Year Will Fox ’18 and First Team All-CAA selections Max Buchanan ’15, TJ Neubauer ’16 and Tristan Sperry ’15.
