Stags Win MAAC Softball Championship, Begin NCAA Postseason on Friday
The Fairfield softball team won three straight elimination games this past weekend, including two on Championship Saturday, to win the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. The Stags lay claim to the conference crown for the first time since 1991 and will make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA postseason this weekend.
Fairfield will be a part of the NCAA Championship’s Tuscaloosa Regional, drawing sixth-seed and host Alabama to begin the double-elimination regional on Friday, May 15 at 4 p.m. (Eastern). The game will air live to a national television audience on the SEC Network and online via WatchESPN. The regional field also includes South Carolina-Upstate and Washington.
Under the guidance of 18-year head coach Julie Brzezinski, the Stags are led by First Team All-MAAC performer and MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Lauren Filicia ’16. Also the Most Valuable Player of the MAAC Championship, Filicia enters the NCAA postseason with a .406 batting average. Pitchers Lauren Falkanger ’16 and Destinee Pallotto ’18, who each won two games in the MAAC Championship en route to All-Championship honors, have both been in the circle for 11 victories this spring.
