Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars: West African Band Performs Friday
This Friday, February 27, at 1 p.m., the popular West African band, Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, will perform in the lower level of the Barone Campus Center. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion with representatives from Save the Children and The Foundation for West Africa about Sierra Leone, the Ebola crisis, and the unique role of the band in this crisis.
Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars formed their band in refugee camps during Sierra Leone’s 1991-2002 civil war. They have since toured the world and inspired audiences with their reggae-flavored songs of resilience, hope and joy. They were the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary in 2005, and have appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and big U.S. stages alongside such performers as Ziggy Marley, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, and Keith Richards, and actress and activist Angelina Jolie. Their debut album, Living Like a Refugee , was released on the Anti label in 2006.
As a result of the Ebola crisis, they are currently based in Rhode Island.
