About Spiritual Friendship: Oā€™Callaghan Lecture Oct. 7

Noted scholar Janet Ruffing, R.S.M., comes to Fairfield on Wednesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. to speak about the spiritual friendship of two devout women, Elisabeth Leseur and Soeur Marie Goby. Their friendship represents one of the first documented between a lay and religious woman.

Dr. Ruffing is professor of the practice of spirituality and ministerial leadership at Yale Divinity School. She is also professor emerita at Fordham University, where she directed the program in Spirituality and Spiritual Direction from 1986-2009.

Extensively published, and a lecturer both internationally and nationally, Dr. Ruffing is the author of To Tell the Sacred Tale: Spiritual Direction and Narrative (Paulist 2011), Spiritual Direction: Beyond the Beginnings (Paulist 2000), Elisabeth Leseur: Selected Writings (CWS, Paulist, 2005) and numerous articles.Ā She holds a doctorate in Christian spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif., and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and Certificate in Spirituality and Worship from Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley.

The free lecture is the 15th Annual Anne Drummey O'Callaghan Lecture on Women in the Church, and honors the memory of O'Callaghan, a Norwalk woman who dedicated herself to religious education in the Diocese of Bridgeport. The event will be held in the Dolan School of Business Dining room, and is co-sponsored by the O'Callaghan Family and the Center for Catholic Studies.
