Student Artists in the Spotlight
Fairfield’s student artists will command center stage in a series of performances and exhibitions taking place in the next few weeks.
Art Exhibitions :
Decoding Reality , the Studio Art senior seminar capstone exhibition, opened Wednesday, April 15 and will run through Wednesday, May 6 in the Loyola Hall Galleries, ground floor, Loyola Hall. Seniors exhibiting their work are Abigail Abrams, Kelly Conley, and Allison Nottingham.
The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the exhibition is free and open to the public.
A second art exhibition, Fair Water , will have an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 22 , at the Experimental Space Gallery, Loyola Hall. The free opening includes a 6 p.m. walk around the campus waterways to view installed wetlands projects led by Dr. James Biardi and artist Mary Mattingly. Working with Mattingly, students in seven courses worked to create objects, systems and structured environments based on floating wetlands. The projects are intended to clean toxins from the water, introduce habitations and/or protect from storm surges.
Dance Ensemble :
On Friday, April 17 , the Fairfield Dance Ensemble will present Fairfield Funk Dance Ensemble Show at 7 p.m. at the Quick Center, featuring an a cappella performance by The Bensonians before the dancers take the stage. Tickets are $6.
Orchestra :
On Wednesday, April 27 is the final ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Orchestra concert of the season. The concert is free and takes place in Gonzaga Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
Theatre Fairfield :
Theatre Fairfield, the University’s resident production company, will close its 2014-15 season with the Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q . The play will be performed in the Wien Experimental Theatre at the Quick Center for the Arts April 22 to 25 at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
The cast for this puppet-filled play includes several students: Alec Bandzes ’15, Lizzie Bateson ’16, Liam Cahill ’18, Maggie Greene ’15, Franco Luzzi ’15 (photo, right, by Alejandro "Lex" Ulloa), Brendan McNamara ’17, Alex Mongillo ’16, Katie Premus ’15, Tori Schchmann ’16, Cristelle Sens-Castet ’15, Sean Switzer ’17 and Danny Ward ’18.
Filled to the brim with satire, the production contains mature content and language.
Tickets are $12 general admission, $6 for seniors and University staff and $5 for students.
Jazz Ensemble :
Trombonist Ryan Keberle, who has played with Wynton Marsalis, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Keyes, will be the guest artist for the Jazz Ensemble’s spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 23 , at Gonzaga Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Brian Q. Torff, director of jazz and popular music, will direct the ensemble through a program that includes Torff’s “Ndiyindoda,” “Slow and Steady Wins the Race” by students Chris Finelli ’15 and Robby Schwartz ’16, “Alright” by Amanda Ocasio ’16 and two arrangements by DJ Horstmann ’16, “Lolona” and “Sway.”
Glee Club :
The ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp Glee Club will present “Glee Goes Rock ‘N Roll: ’50s ’60s ’70s,” featuring the music of Queen, Carole King, Michael Jackson and more at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 30 , at the Quick Center for the Arts. The program, conducted by Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M., will include performances by Sweet Harmony, The Bensonians, The Pops Band and The Glee Band.
The Glee Club will open the evening with Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” and continue on with Otis Redding’s “Respect,” The Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” and much more. Tickets are $10 general admission, $6 for students.
Film, Television, and Media Arts Program
The Film, Television and Media Arts Program will present Cinefest Fairfield 2015, an annual student film festival, on Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m. in the Quick Center. The evening features a showcase of extraordinary student-created short films and an awards will be presented in 13 categories. Student hosts will interview the filmmakers on the stage and a pre-show -- complete with red carpet interviews -- takes place before the main event. Light refreshments will be served.
Cinefest is free and open to the public.
