Staff Association Awards Scholarship goes to Matthew DeCaprio ’15

¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp’s Staff Association, comprised of employees from throughout campus, brings the University community together by hosting a number of social events while raising funds for deserving students. Over the last several years, the Staff Association has presented $90,000 in scholarships to selected members of the junior class. As in previous years, this year’s scholarship committee had the difficult task of deciding which student, among dozens of exemplary applicants from the Class of 2015, would be the recipient of the 2014 Staff Association Award.

After careful deliberation, it was evident to the Scholarship Committee, consisting of Amy Angelastro, Sharon Ferguson, Colleen Gilbertson, and Cathy O’Donnell, that one student, Matthew DeCaprio ’15 (pictured with the Rev. Charles Allen, S.J.), stood out for his passion and leadership of the Man 2 Man Living and Learning Community in Regis Hall. The committee was impressed with DeCaprio's level of academic excellence and felt his community service exemplified the Ignatian spirit inspired by the Jesuit tradition of being men and women for others. DeCaprio was awarded a $4,500 scholarship at the Staff Association luncheon on May 2.

Matthew is currently a junior majoring in biology, with minors in both chemistry and mathematics. Upon graduation, Matt plans on attending medical school to become a physician; specifically, an orthopedic surgeon.

Matt will be the senior resident assistant (SRA) in Regis Hall for the 2014-15 academic year. As the SRA in Regis, he will work closely with the staff to provide programs and guidance for the Man 2 Man Living and Learning Community. Matt is also involved with other clubs on campus, including Rotaract, the Health Professionals Program, and the Future Health Professionals Club. Matt also has been appointed as the president of Fairfield’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a national pre-health professions honor society.
