Campus Sustainability Committee Presents Plan

The Campus Sustainability Committee is pleased to present for review to the ¶¶Òô»ÆƬapp community the final draft version of the Campus Sustainability Plan and Survey. An effort to reduce the campus carbon footprint, it has been in the works for more than two years and has been developed under the guidance of a rotating group of administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

The committee would appreciate comments, critiques, and suggestions on the Campus Sustainability Plan—a dynamic document intended to provide a roadmap for major steps toward achieving sustainability through near, medium, and long-term goals. The draft provides the University community with an overview of the current environmental/sustainability state of affairs on campus, as well as presents current and future goals, standards, and ideals for the rest of the decade.

Nine functional areas have been identified (Administration, Academics, Buildings, Energy, Finances, Operations, Land and Water, Student Engagement, Waste Management), and campus groups have developed a series of recommendations, goals, objectives, and benchmarks. The goals developed by each functional group are interconnected and directed to enhancing University sustainability initiatives across the spectrum of institutional activities. The vision captured by this plan proposes initiatives that balance economics with social and environmental impacts.

Please direct all comments to Dr. Jim Biardi , associate professor of biology and chair of the Faculty Committee on Sustainability.
