Panel & Reception: “The Society of Jesus: Suppression, Survival, Reinvention”
"Conversations: Panel Discussion and Reception" for all Faculty, Staff and Administrators in Bellarmine Hall on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014
4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. “The Society of Jesus: Suppression, Survival, Reinvention,” panel and discussion, Diffley Room, Bellarmine Hall: followed from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m . with a reception, in the Great Hall , Bellarmine Hall.
The Spring 2014 issue of Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education magazine highlights a watershed event in Jesuit history, when the Society of Jesus was “perpetually abolished and entirely extinguished,” in 1773, commonly known as the period of the “Suppression” (and “Restoration,” in 1814). Our panel of Jesuit "All Stars" – President von Arx, S.J. , joined by Rev. Charlie Allen, S.J. , and Rev. Michael Fahey, S.J., and moderated by Rev. Mark Scalese, S.J . – will talk about the Suppression both as an historical event and as a factor in the Society’s dynamics today. Who could have predicted a Jesuit pope? And yes, vocations to the Society are trending up.
Following this panel presentation and discussion in the Diffley Room in Bellarmine Hall, we will adjourn to the Great Hall for a reception to cheer our progress toward the end of the semester. Please join us! RSVP to Colleen Gilbertson (cgilbertson@fairfield.edu).
