"Home for Christmas!" Students, Bensonians Join in President's Message

On a freezing night last week, the Stag statue was looking rather snappy in the spotlights, all toasty in a red horse blanket and ankle socks, antlers wrapped in lights, and proudly sporting a Christmas wreath around his neck.

Students going to and from the BCC wondered what was going on. The Christmas music of Bing Crosby was blaring across the Quad to create a festive mood, and the Bensonians were alternately tuning up and playing around. There were spotlights all around, and a huge camera on a jib.

It was all part of the “Be a Stag Star” video event coordinated by Student Activities and the Media Center. Students who came by got Santa hats (jovially distributed by University President Fr. Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J.) and hot chocolate as incentive to stick around to send Christmas greetings today to the greater ¶¶Ňô»ĆƬapp community of more than 40,000 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and students across the campus — and across the country.

After a brainstorm with Marketing & Communications staff, who wanted to do a different kind of holiday greeting this year, Casey Timmeny, producer, and the Media Center production team got their creative juices going.

Four students from the Media Center were involved in the project. Under Timmeny’s direction they did everything from operating cameras to recording audio. Shots involved golf carts, dramatic music, a new rendition of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and the aforementioned special outfit for the Stag.

“Collaboration is key in a project like this,” noted Timmeny. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the talent of the Bensonians and the production team—and their willingness to film outdoors on two frigid nights. I’m so grateful to them. It was a lot of fun!”

Look for your holiday greeting in your email box sometime on Thursday, Dec. 19 !
