ٲú Celebrates "Christmas in Ireland" at the Quick

Presenting a Celtic music celebration that warms the heart, the acclaimed Irish ensemble ٲú celebrates the holidays with a performance of “ Christmas in Ireland: An Nollaig in Éirinn” at 3 p.m ., on Sunday, December 8, 2013 , at Ƭapp’s . In Ireland, the festival of Christmas has for centuries been celebrated by traditional Irish music and song. There are many musical tributes that pay homage to early Irish traditions such as The Laden Table, placing a candle in a window, and touring from house to house on St. Stephen’s Day. Winner of major awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, ٲú comes to Fairfield with special guests to share in this glorious celebration of Christmas from their homeland. The program is made possible in part by the generous support of the Inn at Fairfield Beach and Sheaffer. Media sponsor is radio station WPKN (89.5) FM . Hailing from historic County Waterford, ٲú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. Recognized the world over for its standing-room-only appearances, the band’s concerts are true events, featuring high-energy performances and a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. Celtic music lovers have been thrilled by the ensemble’s virtuoso players on fiddle, flutes, button accordion, percussion, and by the gorgeous voice of Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh. ٲú has performed around the globe and recorded nine critically acclaimed albums; it will be celebrating its 20 th anniversary next year. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, ٲú has toured throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, and North America, with stops at venues such as The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Cal Performances, Stanford, the Krannert Center, Notre Dame, and Symphony Space in New York City. ٲú’s popular recordings are available on the Shanachie label and live performances are frequently broadcast on NPR, the CBC, and the BBC. The Washington Post describes the ensemble as “a vibrant mix of virtuosity, energy, and empathy.” A live DVD, “One Night Stand,” was filmed at Vicar St., Dublin, and the band’s latest disc “Seanchas: Lore, Tradition, Mythos,” features a collection of songs, jigs, airs, reels, and polkas.
