Darwin, God and the Drama of Life

For many, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and the Bible’s story of creation would seem too contradictory to reconcile.

But Dr. Glenn Sauer, the Donald J. Ross Sr., Ph.D., Professor in Biology and Chemistry, doesn’t think so.  Last year, he created the “God and Modern Biology Program” with a large grant from the John Templeton Foundation. The series of lectures and seminars is an enrichment program for Catholic parish leaders (clergy, educators and lay people) to develop instructional programs that help them address issues at the intersection of religion and science.

"We have been meeting for a year now, and these Church leaders have been working to develop their competence in discussing science and religion,” says Dr. Sauer.

On Thursday, April 4, the program will host noted Catholic theologian John Haught, Ph.D., senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown. Dr. Haught’s talk, “Darwin, God and the Drama of Life” will explore new directions in thinking about the relationship between faith and biology. Dr. Haught is the author of numerous books, including Deeper Than Darwin: The Prospect for Religion in the Age of Evolution , and God and the New Atheism: A Critical Response to Dawkins, Harris and Hitchens .

“John Haught has been instrumental in stating that evolution is not hostile to religious beliefs,” explains Dr. Sauer. “In fact, he notes that understanding evolutionary biology can enhance theological thinking and religious belief.”

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. It is free and open to the public.
